HI everyone, my name is Cecile Niebuhr and I am one of the registered dietitians at Transform Your Health Network. Today I want to talk to you about challenges that may be preventing you from achieving your weight and health goals as well as possible solutions to overcoming these challenges.
One of the biggest problems that I have faced in maintaining an optimal weight has definitely been using food to deal with negative emotions particularly stress and disappointment. This is known as emotional eating. There are various reasons why emotional eating will prevent you from achieving your optimal weight. I am quickly going to discuss some of them now:
The first reason is the type of food you eat. These foods obviously vary from person to person, everyone has their kryptonite but they are usually high in sugar and fat. Thy also require minimal preparation and are readily available. They include foods like sweets, chips chocolates, take-aways and so forth. The problem with this is that they don’t sustain you for very long. For example you’ll eat a chocolate but half an hour you want to eat something else. This leads to you eating much more than you normally would. Studies have also shown that eating these foods on a continual basis can make you form a sort of dependency on them. So continual intake of these foods and limited exercise means that you are eating much more energy than what you need. This extra energy is then stored as fat which leads to the weight gain that you will see later on the scale.
The other problem with these foods is that it usually means that it usually means that you are not eating enough of the proper foods that you should be eating like fruit, vegetables and dairy products. These foods are rich in vitamins and minerals which your body really needs in order to grow, repair, maintain and look after itself. They also help all the functions in your body to work to the best of their ability.
I am situated in Constantia Park in Midrand and I am more than ready and willing to take this journey with you by providing nutritional information and guidance that you might need to achieve your goals. I look forward to hearing from you.
